WASHINGTON (CN) - The FAA has adopted several international security standards to protect passenger airplanes.

New planes in which the FAA requires a door between the passenger compartment and the cockpit must design cockpits impervious to projectiles and aggressive people. The rest of the plane must be protected from the effects of smoke or noxious gas. By next year, all airplanes with more than 60 seats must have a place where a suspected bomb can be placed to minimize risk to the airplane.
