WASHINGTON (CN) - The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to add a rare cancer-like disease, AL amyloidosis, to the list of conditions presumed to be caused by Agent Orange or other herbicides used in the Vietnam War to knock back jungle underbrush hiding the enemy.
The presumption allows veterans of the war to get treatment and disability benefits without having to show that military service caused their medical condition.
AL amyloidosis, also known as systemic amyloidosis, can cause serious changes in nearly any organ of the body. Chemotherapy is used to treat it, but it often may cause serious damage before it is diagnosed.
