Agency Wants Medicare Patients to Get Flu Shots

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services want certain participating providers and suppliers to offer annual influenza shots to the program's patients.

The agency, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has proposed a rule that requires the shots to be offered unless medically contraindicated or unless the patient or a representative or surrogate declines vaccination.

The rule is intended to increase the number of patients receiving the flu vaccine and to decrease the incidence of the flu and deaths from the disease.

The rule also would require certain providers and suppliers to develop policies and procedures that would allow them to offer vaccinations for pandemic influenza, in case of a future event for which a vaccine may be developed.
