Agency Ups Protection|on Caviar Producing Fish

WASHINGTON (CN) - Endangered Species Act protection will be increased for the southern distinct population segment of the North American green sturgeon, in early July.

New National Marine Fisheries Service rules prohibit activity likely to result in harm to the species.

The sturgeon was protected in 2006 throughout its range, which extends from British Columbia to the Sacramento River, the only river in which the caviar producing sturgeon spawns.

In general, any activity, including recreational fishing, that will kill a sturgeon or impair its ability to reach its spawning grounds and spawn, will require authorization through the agency.

The new prohibitions include limitations on alternations to riparian habitat next to where the sturgeon spawn, including road building activities, recreation and industrial development.
