Agency to Study Impacts of Fuel Economy Program

WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement analyzing the potential environmental impacts of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy program for cars and light trucks.

For the statement, the agency will consider potential impacts of new fuel economy standards for model years 2017-2025 that the agency will be proposing under the Energy Independence and Security Act.

At this stage, the agency requests comments from federal, state, and local agencies, Indian tribes, and the public to help identify the environmental issues and reasonable alternatives to be examined.

The agency plans to analyze the impacts of eight different standards for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement: Two points bracketing the possible action alternatives for cars (2 percent per year and 7 percent per year) and two points bracketing the possible alternatives for trucks (2 percent per year and 7 percent per year), as well as a No Action Alternative and Preferred Alternative for cars and a No Action Alternative and Preferred Alternative for trucks. The preferred alternatives have not yet been decided.

In this action, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is cooperating with the Council on Environmental Quality, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of Energy.
