Agency Studies Teaching|Consumers About Tires

WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration continues to conduct consumer research on replacement tire purchasing decisions, and seeks input on educating consumers about the effect of tires on fuel efficiency, safety and durability.

The consumer education program is part of the agency's obligation to develop a national tire fuel efficiency rating system and educate consumers on factors to consider when purchasing tires, required by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

NHTSA already has conducted focus group studies on ratings, published a notice of a proposal for a new consumer information program in the Federal Register, and conducted an Internet survey on what influences consumers' tire purchasing decisions and how best to convey the information in this new program to consumers.

The NHTSA intends to conduct further consumer research, and invites interested parties to submit written comments and participate in a public meeting.
