Agency Protects|Puget Sound Rockfish

WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Marine Fisheries Service has listed two Puget Sound rockfish as threatened and one as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.

The threatened yelloweye rockfish and canary rockfish, and endangered bocaccio rockfish live in the rare rocky areas of the sound. They are threatened by overfishing, pollution, and inadequacy of regulation.

Part of the threat to the fish is that they are long lived, and the number of large females that produce the healthier young that more often grow to the next stage of life, has dwindled.
