Agency Proposes School Lunch Staff Certification

WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed imposing minimum qualification standards for school lunch and breakfast program workers.

The regulation would establish mandatory education, training and certification levels for directors and managers of National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs administered by the Food and Nutrition Service.

It would also institute hiring standards for state and local school program directors and require all personnel in the programs to complete annual education and training.

The aim is to "provide consistent, national standards for school nutrition professionals and staff" and to "ensure that key school nutrition personnel are meeting minimum professional standards to adequately perform the duties and responsibilities of their positions," according to the action.

The changes are part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which amends the 1966 Child Nutrition Act.

Comments are due by April 7.
