Agency Proposes More Habitat for Tidewater Goby

WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to add 2,154 acres of critical habitat for the endangered tidewater goby, a small fish, to help it recover from widespread loss and degradation of its habitat.

The goby has been listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act since 1994. According to the agency, the goby is threatened by coastal development projects, water diversion, cattle grazing and feral pigs that prey on the fish.

This addition, which would bring the total acreage designated as critical habitat to 12,157 acres, would allow movement between isolated populations enhancing genetic diversity, reproduction and rearing of offspring.
