WASHINGTON (CN) - The Consumer Product Safety Commission is considering whether the risk of injury and death is unreasonably high with the use of the new larger and faster recreational off-highway vehicles, and is beginning a rulemaking.
Recreational off-highway vehicles are bigger than all-terrain vehicles, have four or more tires, seat two, and go over 30 miles per hour.
Injuries reported to the agency have included fatalities, "degloving," fractures, and crush injuries, some of which required amputation of limbs. The commission requests technical information on the vehicles, and comments on standards.
