WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. National Park Service is planning a 27-mile bike path for Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, according to a proposed regulation.
The first stage of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail bike path was completed in June, with the rest to be constructed over a ten year period, the NPS said.
The route generally will parallel state highways but also will use "existing corridors, such as old logging trails and a narrow gauge railbed," according to the regulation.
The path would increase safety and encourage alternative transportation for "bicyclists, walkers, runners, wheelchair users, rollerbladers, and cross-country skiers," the agency said.
The 71,000-acre Lakeshore is named after a complex of ancient sand dunes formed by wind, ice and water over thousands of years, according to the regulation.
The agency requests public comments on the proposed rule by Dec. 14.
