African Wild Ass: Now ‘Africanus’ not ‘Asinus’

WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has changed the taxonomy of the African wild ass under the Endangered Species Act from Equus asinus to Equus africanus.

The change reflects the current scientifically accepted taxonomy and nomenclature of the species. The USFWS will use Equus asinus to refer to the domesticated donkey or burro.
