Shooter Opens Fire on Colorado Grocery Store, Killing 10

Police responded to an active shooter incident Monday at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, a college town 25 miles north of Denver.

BOULDER, Colo. (CN) — One police officer was among 10 killed in a shooting at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, on Monday.

Police confirmed officer Eric Talley, 51, was killed while responding to the shooting Monday afternoon.

“We are very early in the investigation. Officers responded within minutes and entered the building very quickly,” Boulder Police Department Commander Kerry Yamaguchi said during a press conference Monday evening.

“I can share with the public today that there is no ongoing threat. We have one person of interest in custody. That person was injured and is being treated for the injuries,” Yamaguchi said.

Video from the scene shows a bearded man with a leg wound being led from the store in handcuffs. Police confirmed he is the only person receiving medical treatment following the tragic event.

FBI agents arrived on the scene along with other law enforcement teams.

“This is a tragedy and nightmare for Boulder County,” said Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty. “In response we have cooperation and assistance from local, state and federal efforts. This will very much be a coordinated effort and we will stand united in support of the victims and their families to ensure that justice is done.”

The unidentified individual fired at police responding to the incident at the King Soopers in the Table Mesa neighborhood of Boulder, 25 miles north of Denver. Apart from the slain officer, the identities of the other nine victims have not yet been disclosed.

“Like my fellow Coloradans, I am closely watching unfolding events at King Soopers in Boulder. My prayers are with our fellow Coloradans in this time of sadness and grief as we learn more about the extent of the tragedy,” Governor Jared Polis said in a statement.

Data compiled by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University puts Monday's attack as America's seventh mass killing this year. The sixth happened on March 16 in Atlanta with the killing of eight outside a trio of massage businesses.

A year prior, the country saw the smallest number of such attacks in more than a decade, according to the database, due to the pandemic.

Colorado meanwhile is no stranger to such tragedies, having been the site of the Columbine school shooting in 1999 and then the Aurora movie theater shooting of 2012.
