LAS VEGAS (CN) - ACORN and a former regional director pleaded not guilty Tuesday to 13 felony counts of voter registration fraud for allegedly giving bonuses to canvassers based on the amount of voter registration cards they received. Amy Busefink and ACORN entered their pleas in Clark County Court. A trial date was set for April 19, The Associated Press reported.
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, a political advocacy group, was accused by state officials of running an illegal bonus system, known as "blackjack" or "21+," that required canvassers to collect at least 20 voter registration cards. The system also gave canvassers $5 bonuses for each card they collected above 20.
It is illegal in Nevada to pay bonuses or set quotas for collecting voter registration cards.
