NEW YORK (CN) - The American Civil Liberties Union seeks the immediate release of the Office of the Inspector General's report on whether FBI agents witnessed or participated in abusive interrogations of detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo Bay.
The ACLU filed a FOIA request demanding all records relating to the inspector general's investigation of the FBI's involvement in detainee interrogations - the release of which "has generated significant public interest when it was announced in January 2005," the ACLU claims.
The inspector general's report "was written in response to allegations made by FBI agents that officials at Guantanamo Bay were using abusive techniques to interrogate detainees," the ACLU states. "(T)hese allegations surfaced as a result of the FOIA request and subsequent lawsuit filed by the ACLU."
The civil-rights group says the information is "urgently needed" to "inform the public about actual or alleged Federal government activity."
