Accused Terrorists Get|a Break on Legal Bills

WASHINGTON (CN) - People whose assets have been frozen by the Treasury Department due to their suspected connection to terrorism will be able to use some of their frozen assets to pay for legal representation, if they get a special license for it.

Under three executive orders issued by former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, the Office of Foreign Assets Control may freeze the assets of individuals or organizations the Secretary of the Treasury has determined are involved with terrorism, if the assets are within the control of U.S. regulated financial institutions.

To receive money to pay for legal services, those whose assets have been frozen must apply for a special license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control, which will make disbursements based on a preset schedule fee.
