Accountant Cops to ‘Situation’ Tax Scam

(CN) - The one-time accountant for Michael "The Situation" Sorrentino admitted Wednesday he helped the former "Jersey Shore" star and his brother evade as much as $1.5 million in income taxes.

Appearing before U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton in Newark, N.J., Gregg Mark pleaded guilty to one county of conspiracy.

Sorrentino and his brother Marc were indicted in September on charges they failed to report $9 million in income that The Situation earned from the MTV reality show and other promotional activities. Prosecutors claim the brothers also wrongly claimed luxury cars, flashy clothes and other swag as business expenses, and liberally

Michael Sorrentino was also charged with failing to file a tax return. The Sorrentinos have pleaded not guilty.

But Mark, 51, who worked for a Staten Island, N.Y. accounting firm, admitted to filing false tax returns for the brothers from 2010 to 2013, during which time the Sorrentinos and their businesses - MPS Enterprises LLC and Situation Nation Inc. - received millions of dollars in income.

Mark admitted the Sorrentinos' false returns defrauded the IRS out of $550,000 to $1.5 million.

He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on March 24.
