$830,000+ award upheld in casino trip-and-fall case

LAKE CHARLES, La. — An appeals court in Louisiana upheld a $832,479 award against a casino and in favor of an elderly woman who shattered her left wrist in a trip-and-fall on the gaming hall’s carpet. The casino called the award “abusively high,” but the appellate judges disagree: “She has a plate and nine screws that are permanently embedded in her wrist, leaving her at risk for infection and future surgery.” Her treating physician testified that anybody who sustains her type of injury in their 80s will likely not see a complete recovery.
