55 Years for Border Patrolman’s Killing

SAN DIEGO (CN) - A third defendant was sentenced Thursday, to 55 years in federal prison, for robbing and killing a Border Patrol agent 4 years ago.

The late Robert Rosas Jr. was shot to death in July 2009 as five men robbed him of his night vision goggles.

Jose Luis Ramirez Dorantes pleaded guilty in January to conspiring to commit robbery and kidnapping, and carrying a gun during a crime of violence.

He was one of five men in the conspiracy, prosecutors said.

Ramirez, 45, of Mexico, did not kill Rosas. He stood watch on the Mexican side of the border, near Campo, Calif., according to the U.S. attorney.

He is the third man to be sentenced for the crimes.

Christian Daniel Castro Alvarez is serving 40 years, and Marcos Rodriguez Perez will do 56 years.

Emilio Samyn Gonzales Arenazas pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on Jan. 23.

Jose Juan Chacon Morales is a fugitive, with a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to his arrest.
