5-Year-Old a Suspect in Drowning

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (CN) - Police say a 5-year-old girl told social workers she drowned her 18-month-old cousin in a bathtub because he cried too much.

Kansas City police originally believed the death on June 3 was an accident, but are investigating it as a possible homicide because of what the girl allegedly told social workers, the Kansas City Star reported.

Police told the Star that a teen-ager was watching several children at the home where the death occurred.

Police said the 5-year-old girl told social workers that she dragged the boy into the tub, where other children had bathed, and drowned him because "he made too much noise" and "cried too much."

The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office has not issued a cause of death yet. Missouri does not have a minimum age at which children assume criminal responsibility. The child's history, age and crime are considered before making a decision.
