BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (CN) - A Minor League baseball player sued the Long Island Ducks and former Major League All-Star Jose Offerman for $5 million, claiming Offerman bashed him in the head with a bat during a game, inflicting permanent injuries.
Johnathan Nathans, a catcher for the Bridgeport Bluefish, says Offerman was hit in the calf by a pitched ball during the Aug. 14, 2007 game. He says Offerman charged the mound and went after the pitcher, Matt Beech, and Nathans set out after him to protect his teammate. Offerman swung at the pitcher but hit Nathans in the head, according to the complaint.
Nathans says he suffered traumatic brain injury, concussion, vestibular dysfunction and other problems from the attack.
He demands punitive damages for assault and battery, recklessness and negligence. He is represented by Joshua Koskoff.
Offerman, an infielder, made the Major League All-Star game with the Dodgers in 1995 and the Red Sox in 1999. The Baltimore Sun reported that "Offerman had faced up to 10 years in prison on two felony assault charges. He was granted probation in 2007, ordered to get anger management treatment and pay the medical expenses of Beech and Nathans."
The Ducks and Bluefish are members of the Atlantic League. The fracas occurred at the Bluefish home park in Bridgeport.
