47-Cent Overcharge Brings Class Action

LAS VEGAS (CN) - A deceptive-trade class action claims Dollar Rent-A-Car and Thrifty Car Rentals overcharged a man by 47 cents. Walter Schenker estimates that Dollar-Thrifty gets $184,000 a year by overcharging customers for its "vehicle license fee."

Schenker says Dollar-Thrifty, the parent company, incorrectly calculates a 4 percent "vehicle license fee," a legal recovery fee to offset taxes and other fees.

Schenker says the companies are required to exclude from the fee any other fees it is required to pay to do business at an airport.

But Schenker says Dollar-Thrifty adds up all fees before assessing its additional 4 percent when renting out of McCarran National Airport.

Schenker says he rented a car for three days from the airport on Nov. 2, and was charged $8.21 per day, totaling $24.96 for three days.

He was then charged a $9 customer facility charge, a 10 percent airport access fee of $2.50, and the 4 percent vehicle license fee of $1.47.

The vehicle license fee of $1.47 is 4 percent of $36.46 - the $24.96 base rental rate, plus the $9 customer facility charge and the $2.50 airport access fee. He says the 4 percent fee should have been only $1, or 4 percent of $24.96.

Schenker wants this to stop. He is represented in Clark County Court by Mark Albright of Albright Stoddard.
