MANHATTAN (CN) - The former fiscal director of a foster care agency was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for stealing more than $145,000 in adoption subsidy checks meant for needy children.
Stay Thompson aka Stay Daniels, 45, tried to embezzle another $1 million from Concord Family Services, which got funding from the Administration for Children's Services between 1990 and 2008, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Thompson admitted taking subsidy payments since 2005 for fostering four children who did not exist.
She shared the payments with co-defendants Nigel Osarenkhoe, who was the ACS adoption subsidy supervisor, and Lethem Duncan, the former ACS deputy director of payment services.
Thompson also must serve 3 years of supervised release and pay nearly $300,000 in restitution and forfeiture.
Duncan, who pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges in 2008, is the only defendant still awaiting sentencing. In addition to Osarenkhoe, four other co-conspirators were sentenced for their roles in the conspiracy.
