Police in Poway, California say a man is in custody after a shooting Saturday morning at a local synagogue that left four people injured.

(CN) – Police in Poway, California, say a man is in custody after a shooting Saturday morning at a local synagogue that one person dead and four others injured.

San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said the shooting was reported just before 11:30 a.m. PST at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, about 25 miles north of San Diego.

The synagogue, which serves as a community center for ultra-Orthodox Jews, was holding a Passover celebration when the shooting occurred. Poway Mayor Steve Vaus said one person has died and that the shooting was a "hate crime."

"Hate has no place in ANY community... least of all Poway," Vaus tweeted Saturday afternoon. "We will put our arms around each other and walk through this tragedy as the family we have always been and always will be."

In an update posted on Twitter, the sheriff’s department said that a man had been detained for questioning in connection to the shooting and that multiple injuries were reported.

Sgt. Aaron Meleen told a group of reporters at the scene that they were “confident that there are no shooters that are outstanding.”

In a media briefing Saturday afternoon, authorities said a white male entered the synagogue carrying an "AR-type assault weapon" and opened fire on the people inside.

Six months ago, a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue left 11 people dead. In that Oct. 27 incident, a truck driver who police say had a hatred of Jews is facing trial for the murders.
