$2M Fine for Importing Substandard Engines

WASHINGTON (CN) - Three Mississippi companies will pay $2 million to settle claims they imported and sold thousands of Chinese train engines that do not meet Clean Air Act emission standards, federal prosecutors said. PowerTrain, Wood Sales, and Tool Mart imported almost 80,000 polluting engines and equipment between 2002 and 2008.

The equipment lacked 2-year emissions-related warranties and did not meet federal standards. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said PowerTrain's engines emitted too much hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide, which help form ground-level ozone.

As part of the settlement, PowerTrain agreed to spend $600,000 to offset pollution from its engines, and provide subsidies for consumers to replace their old wood stoves with newer, EPA-approved stoves.
