WASHINGTON (CN) - President Barack Obama authorized the Secretary of State to release up to $26 million in humanitarian aid to help refugees displaced by the conflict in the South Kordofan and Blue Nile states of Sudan.
According to the United Nations, there are at least 82,000 Blue Nile refugees, and another 20,000 have crossed from South Kordofan into the newly independent South Sudan.
The refugees are fleeing increasing battles between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, which was once affiliated with the secessionist south, and the armed forces of the government of Sudan.
