MARSHALL, Texas (CN) — Car seat maker Dorel Juvenile Group must pay $24 million to the family of a 4-year-old boy who suffered spinal cord injuries in a car crash, a Texas federal jury said Friday.
Nicole Hinson sued Foxborough, Mass -based Dorel last year for gross negligence and product liability. The child products manufacturer is a division of Canada-based Dorel Industries.
Hinson says her son, Cayden, was partially paralyzed after a car crash three years ago while seated in a Safety 1st Summit Deluxe car seat.
The jury found Dorel 80 percent responsible for the injury.
The jury awarded $4 million for future physical pain and mental anguish, $1.2 million for loss of earning capacity, $3 million for future disfigurement, $3 million for future physical impairment and $12.8 million for future medical expenses.
The jury found the driver of the other car responsible for 20 percent of the injuries.
Dorel did not immediately respond to an email message requesting comment Saturday.
