ST. LOUIS (CN) - How much is 15 years wrongfully spent in prison worth? Joshua Kezer sued Scott County and a former sheriff and deputy after being cleared of a 1992 murder for which he was convicted though there was no physical evidence linking him to the crime, and no witnesses other than those who said Kezer was 350 miles away on the night of the murder.
Cole County Circuit Judge Richard Callahan ordered Kezer's immediate release in February this year after the prosecution's only witnesses recanted.
Kezer sued Scott County, former Scott County Sheriff William Ferrell and former Scott County Deputy Brenda Schiwitz.
Kezer claims Ferrell and Schiwitz intentionally withheld evidence vital to his defense and knew their witnesses' identification of him were false.
Kezer demands unspecified actual and punitive damages. He is represented by Charles Weiss with Bryan Cave.
