JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - Missouri will get $64 million in environmental cleanup money as a result of the federal bankruptcy reorganization of America Smelting and Refining Co. The money is part of a $1.79 billion settlement with 19 states, the largest recovery of money ever for hazardous waste cleanup and restoration, according to Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster.
Arizona-based America Smelting is a leading producer of copper and one of the largest nonferrous metal producers in the United States. More than 80 sites nationwide will be cleaned up with the bankruptcy settlement money.
Missouri will use the money to clean up sites in Jasper, Newton, St. Francois, Iron and Madison counties, and injuries to the state's natural resources.
