O’Rourke’s campaign said Monday the money came from individual contributions from all 50 states and “without a dime from PACs, corporations or special interests.”

“In just 24 hours, Americans across this country came together to prove that it is possible to run a true grassroots campaign for president – a campaign by all of us for all of us that answers not to the PACs, corporations and special interests but to the people,” O’Rourke said in a statement.

The $6.1 million fundraising haul brought in by O’Rourke surpasses the $5.9 million that Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders raised in the first 24 hours after he launched his campaign last month. California Senator Kamala Harris’ campaign announced the next highest first-day total with $1.5 million.

O’Rourke, 46, launched his bid for the White House on Thursday after months of speculation about his political future following his loss to Senator Ted Cruz last fall. His Senate campaign raised a record-breaking $80 million from donors nationwide, the most of any other candidate.

O’Rourke spent the first three days of his presidential campaign traveling across Iowa, including stops in eight counties that President Barak Obama carried in 2012 that voted for President Donald Trump in 2016. He will visit Michigan and Ohio on Monday before traveling to Pennsylvania and New Hampshire later this week.

The Democratic candidate returns to his hometown of El Paso to kick off his campaign with a rally on March 30.
