Parish President Indicted on Charge of Stalking Ex

NEW ORLEANS (CN) - St. Bernard Parish President David Peralta was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday on a charge of felony stalking following testimony from his ex-wife, Sharon Schaefer.

Peralta already faces a sexual battery charge following an October 2013 incident in which Schaefer said she was handcuffed and raped by Peralta on her birthday in their home. Peralta had said the sex was consensual and a birthday present to Schaefer, whom he was married to at the time.

The stalking indictment is based on evidence seized during a recent search of Peralta's home and office by investigators for the attorney general's office, according to a statement from the attorney general.

Judge William "Rusty" Night of the 22nd Judicial District Court in Louisiana set bond at $35,000, but Peralta has until Monday to turn himself in at the St. Tammany Parish Prison.

Louisiana parishes are equivalent to counties.
