Obama Continues 9-11 National Emergency

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Barack Obama is continuing for another year the national emergency declared on Sept. 23, 2001, just after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

This means that the measures adopted on that date to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the U.S. economy, national security and foreign policy will continue in effect.

The initial national emergency was declared "with respect to persons who commit, threaten to commit, or support terrorism," to "deal with the continuing and immediate threat of further attacks against United States nationals or the United States," after the "grave acts of terrorism and threats of terrorism committed by foreign terrorists, including the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, in New York and Pennsylvania and against the Pentagon."
