LOS ANGELES (CN) - A jury on Wednesday awarded $18 million to the family of the San Francisco Giants baseball fan who was brutally beaten outside Los Angeles Dodgers stadium.
After nine days of deliberations, the jury concluded the Los Angeles Dodgers were partly negligent for the attack on Giants fan Bryan Stow.
Ex-Dodgers owner Frank McCourt escaped liability for the beating, however, according to Southern California Public Radio.
In March 2011, Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood nearly beat to death Giant's fan Bryan Stow, a paramedic, in the parking lot of the Dodgers stadium, where he had gone to watch his team play their rivals in a home opener.
Sanchez, 31, pleaded guilty this year to felony mayhem and was sentenced to 8 years in prison. Norwood, 32, pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to 4 years.
Stow survived, but the attack left him in with brain damage and in a wheelchair. In May 2011, his family sued former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and Los Angeles Dodgers LLC in state court for negligence, claiming there was not enough security at the event.
Judge Victor Chavez presided over the case. Stow's family had asked for $36 million in damages, and punitive damages
