(CN) - Hiring across the United States slowed in August with employers adding a modest 151,000 jobs well below the substantial gains in June and July.
The Labor Department said Friday the unemployment rate remained 4.9 percent for a third straight month.
The department's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that employers added 275,000 in July the most in eight months and 271,000 jobs in June.
But in August, job gains slowed across most of the nation's major industries, and a few sectors notably construction and manufacturing actually shed jobs.
At the same time, the government said, hourly wages remained stagnant in August.
