Georgia Declares Fuel |Emergency After Blast

ATLANTA (CN) - Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal issued a statewide order waiving time-of-service regulations for commercial drivers transporting fuel in the wake of Monday's pipeline explosion in Alabama.

On Monday night the Colonial Pipeline, which transports hundreds of millions of gasoline to the U.S. east coast every day, was shut down by an explosion that occurred near Helena, Alabama.

Deal issued his order Tuesday morning to ensure the uninterrupted supply of transportation fuel to the state.

"Following the Colonial Pipeline rupture and explosion, I have issued an executive order suspending rules limiting drivers' operating hours, per 49 CFR 390 et, seq," Deal said in a statement.

According to Deal's order, the incident at Colonial's primary fuel pipeline had the potential of causing a potential shortage of transportation fuel in Georgia.

"The uninterrupted supply of transportation fuel is an essential need of the public and any shortage threatens the public welfare," the governor said.

The executive order is effective through Nov. 15.
