(CN) — A one-time national security aide to former President Barack Obama has upset two-term Republican incumbent Rep. Tom MacArthur in New Jersey's 3rd District.
Democrat Andy Kim's victory, which was secured after the counting of mail-in and provisional ballots on Wednesday, leaves the state GOP with just one House seat in the next Congress.
Kim, who had never run for elected office before is also the first Asian-American ever elected to Congress from New Jersey.
Upon declaring victory, he told supporters gathered at his Mount Laurel, New Jersey campaign office, that he will be "part of that new generation of leaders who will step up and do what's best for the American people. That's what we need right now."
MacArthur, who was considered an ally of President Donald Trump, refused to concede the race last week, and as of Wednesday afternoon he had still not done so.
