Family Therapists Want|to Do Drug Abuse Care

WASHINGTON (CN) - The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists has petitioned the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to add marriage and family therapists as substance abuse experts.

Recognition would qualify marriage and family therapists to be able to make recommendations concerning education, treatment, return to duty, follow-up drug and alcohol testing, and aftercare for individuals who have violated the agency's fitness for duty policies.

In its petition, the association argues that recognition of expertise in alcohol and substance abuse diagnosis and treatment should qualify a practitioner for recognition by the agency not the specific license carried by the practitioner.

The petition also notes the marriage and family therapists are recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services, along with psychiatry, psychology, clinical social work and psychiatric nursing as one of the five core mental health disciplines qualified to diagnose and treat substance abuse issues.
