Ex-Cop Gets 263 Years for On-Duty Rapes

OKLAHOMA CITY (CN) - Former Oklahoma City cop Daniel Holtzclaw was sentenced Thursday to 263 years in prison for targeting and raping several middle-age black women while on the job.

Holtzclaw, 29, was convicted last month of four counts of rape, one count of rape by instrumentation, six counts of sexual battery, four counts of forcible oral sodomy and three counts of procuring lewd exhibition involving eight victims. He was accused of targeting at least 13 victims.

He had been acquitted on two counts of rape, one count of rape by instrumentation, four counts of sexual battery, three counts of forcible oral sodomy, five counts of procuring lewd exhibition, one count of stalking, one count of burglary and one count of indecent exposure.

State District Judge Timothy Henderson ordered Holtzclaw to serve his punishment consecutively. The jury had selected between five and 30 years of prison for each count.

Holtzclaw was handcuffed and dressed in an orange county jail jumpsuit. He remained silent while the sentence was read and when he was led from the courtroom. He had been emotional when he was convicted last month, bursting into tears and mouthing the words "I didn't do it."

Holtzclaw's sentencing was interrupted for several hours after his attorneys filed a last-ditch motion for a new trial on Wednesday, claiming he was denied a fair trial. The defense asked for a new trial or, in the alternative, an evidentiary hearing on evidence being withheld from Holtzclaw's attorneys. Judge Henderson denied the motion before handing down the sentence.

Several of Holtzclaw's victims and their families were present for sentencing. Shardayreon Hill thanked her family for their support, telling reporters she "stands for justice for all 13 survivors."

When asked why she waited so long to report Holtzclaw, she asked, "How am I going to report the police to the police?"

Hill sued Holtzclaw and the city this past September, saying Holtzclaw forced her into an empty room at a hospital and sexually assaulted and "brutalized" her.

Demetria Campbell sued this past August, accusing Holtzclaw of slamming her face and head against a brick wall and pressing his erect penis into her backside.
