Dem Sledgehammers Homeless Shopping Carts

HONOLULU (CN) - A member of the Hawaii Statehouse took a sledgehammer to dozens of homeless people's shopping carts to protest the problem of homelessness in the island paradise.

Tom Brower, a Democrat from Waikiki, said Tuesday that smashing 20 to 30 shopping carts was enough to make his point, and that he would stop now.

Brower said if a cart was marked with a retailer's name, he returned it to the store.

He also yelled at homeless people who slept at bus stops - but only during the day, Brower told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. He said he let them sleep at night.

Brower said he smashed the homeless people's carts to make the point that homelessness should be addressed - somehow.
