CIA Sued for Report on Russia’s Election Meddling

As the CIA struggled to respond Wednesday to new WikiLeaks revelations about its cyberspying capabilities, a federal FOIA complaint demands that it release an unclassified assessment about Russian meddling in foreign elections.

WASHINGTON (CN) — As the CIA struggled to respond Wednesday to new WikiLeaks revelations about its cyberspying capabilities, a federal FOIA complaint demands that it release an unclassified assessment about Russian meddling in foreign elections.

Judicial Watch sued the CIA for failing to respond to its Dec. 14, 2016, request under the Freedom of Information Act. The request cited a Dec. 13 Wall Street Journal report that U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, had asked the CIA to release its “unclassified assessment of Russian meddling in foreign elections.”

Judicial Watch says the CIA told it by email Tuesday that it would not be able to respond until Dec. 28 this year. That’s way past the legal deadline on Jan. 24, according to the complaint.

The CIA said in an email it does not discuss pending litigation.

Judicial Watch did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.

It is represented by in-house attorney Michael Bekesha.
