Bird Lives!

Monday is the 96th birthday of Charlie Parker, the world's most influential jazz musician. Here is a link to a video of Bird playing his own tune, "Celerity," with Buddy Rich on drums.

The tune was recorded in a studio without any modern techniques of overdubbing, then the video was shot later and Bird "synched" his solo.

The same technique was used in this video of Bird playing with Coleman Hawkins, who plays first. In it, Bird chuckles at Hawkins trying to synch his fingers with his own solo, then proceeds to do the same thing himself.

Very few videos of Charlie Parker exist. He died on March 12, 1955, while watching Tommy Dorsey on TV. He was 34.
