ST. LOUIS (CN) - A St. Louis area attorney was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $154,000 in restitution after admitting he kept clients' settlement money for himself.
Stephen B. Evans, 46, pleaded guilty in January to federal mail and wire fraud charges.
Evans ran a general practice called the Evans Partnership and used a contingent fee arrangement with personal injury or breach of contract clients.
Evans admitted lied to clients that he was withholding a portion of settlement funds for medical or other expenses, but actually kept it for himself.
The scheme caused more the $150,000 in damages, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
