Adoption RICO Case Alleged in Pennsylvania

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (CN) - Main Street Adoption Services pulled a bait-and-switch scheme by bilking tens of thousands of dollars from would-be parents and then abruptly going incommunicado, five American couples claim in Pennsylvania's Eastern District.

In one case, the company, preying on the "hyper-sensitive and vulnerable state of people who desperately want to be parents," left a couple waiting in the lobby of a Guatemalan hotel for the arrival of the little girl they thought they were adopting, according to the suit.

The couple says they subsequently learned that the girl was reclaimed by her mother 11 days before the couple's trek to the country.
