$3 Million Award in Highway Death

ST. LOUIS (CN) - A federal jury awarded $3 million to the family of a man killed in an accident involving logging equipment in December 2011.

Kyle David Brown, 40, was killed when his SUV hit logging equipment that had fallen from a truck on the two-lane Champ Clark Bridge in Louisiana, Mo., which is 90 miles northwest of St. Louis.

Brown's family sued William Davis Logging Inc., of Rockport, Ill., which was delivering a log dragger. Also sued were the truck driver, Kenneth L. Davis Jr., and William Davis. The family claimed Kenneth Davis failed to keep a careful lookout and was driving too fast. They claimed that William Davis wrongfully notified Kenneth Davis that the bridge was safe and clear for the truck to cross.

Police say the chains holding the dragger snapped, causing it to fall from the truck. Brown then drove into the dragger.

The jury returned the verdict in favor of Brown's family on Friday.
